I can tell you that Connery, looking like he did, could absolutely pass as Japanese (and yeah, "East Asian Japanese" - ? Is there another Japan somewhere else?) until he opened his mouth. If that's your argument, I presume you also feel Bond films are 'racist' towards every other nation where they are set which showcases the exoticism of those countries? I can see that, except that isn't racism either.

The only argument you can make is to say that it's making Japan exotic it's orientalism. Bookended as it is by a showcase of traditional martial arts and a very respectful and beautifully shot traditional wedding scene, and in a film which treats all its Japanese characters fairly and with as much respect as it does any other ethnicity in any other film, and considerably better than some, I don't see how you can seriously make this claim. It's easy to make a case for this being racist if you look at it in isolation, but like any film you have to look at the whole context. Where is that intent? Where is the belief of superiority? There is none. Racism, like any form of offence, is founded on intent, in this case an intent to insult or belittle another race or ethnic group based on a belief in one's inherent superiority over that group. You're welcome to do that if you feel the need, of course, but don't expect anyone to take you seriously if you do. It absolutely doesn't apply to a person in a disguise, within the story. Just like blackface, it refers to casting a person of one ethnicity as a character of another, and only that. Look, I just gave you the definition of yellowface.
